New Balance’s dominance in the retro runner vertical is unassailable, both a benefactor and key driver in the fact that you can’t walk a city block without spotting dozens of “dad shoes” on foot. While silhouettes like the 1906R continue to rake it in for the Boston brand, they’ve proven time and time again that they’re not content to rest on their laurels in this regard, and the impending dawn of the New Balance 509 is a further signal of that for 2025.
The sole unit from the New Balance 740 is grafted for the New Balance 509, with most of the changes restricted to the upper. Most of the changes are thus restricted to the upper, switching to swooping quarter panels unimpeded by the usual branching overlays. Those are instead shifted towards the heel counter, resulting in a particularly eye-catching section where a mesh cut-out is intersected by stripes of patterned leather reaching to the midsole.
The logline for the 740 was a more low-key, accessible way to get in on the tech runner wave, and essentially, that remains for this shoe. This “Grey/Black” colorway for the New Balance 509 essentially confirms the same aims, reflecting the dominant aesthetic in that category with silver topmost strips and steely open-knit mesh below.
Already available in Asian markets, The New Balance 509 is expected to make a stateside debut as a part of the brand’s Spring/Summer slate. Be ready for a $100 retail price upon arrival.
