As the host of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, South Africa is due for some additional world-wide exposure as a country in love with footballing. Nike got in touch with Cape Town native Kronk, a designer/illustrator with a penchant for the colorful and whimsical, to design the South Africa’s part in the Nike Sportswear Six Collaboration. Like that of the USA, UK, and Brazil Six Collection, the South African Collection includes a select choice of kicks and gear, all with a patriotic touch. Kronk designed a t-shirt graphic that displays the enthusiastic attitude South Africa has for the sport. Check out the collection of gear and expect these to drop in time for the 2010 World Cup.
South Africa Artist: Kronk Kronk is an emerging designer/illustrator from Cape Town. His work is colorful and whimsical, a collision of rock poster rebelliousness and wry pop culture references. His contributions to the South African team kit are the most intricate of the collection, with an insanely detailed crest embroidery, a bubble lettered font, a kaleidoscopic illustrated pattern (lining the AW77 hoodie), and a cartoonish mascot who seems to be in constant motion. Is he a footballer breaking away on the pitch or a fan blowing a horn in the stands? They are one in the same in Kronk’s mashed-up world.
