Masterful avant-garde designer Yohji Yamamoto and the Three Stripes have modified many a beloved adidas Originals silhouette via their collaborative Y-3 label. From legends like the adidas Stan Smith to modern-day classics like the adidas NMD, Yamamoto has re-imagined the meaning and the inspiration behind many of adidas’ most storied designs. The latest model in his sights? The adidas Superstar, a shoe that Yamamoto has re-invented as the Y-3 Superknot. Although the shoe’s base details like its rubber toe cap and instantly recognizable midsole are largely left intact, the upper is re-worked to provide a look that’s seemingly just as much moccasin as it is sneaker. Gone is the classic three stripe branding, replaced instead by a soft tonal tumbled black leather with the designer’s name stamped on the lateral side in gold foil. Gone also are the standard eyestays, replaced instead by black fabric loops that hold the black waxed laces in place and creep along the upper before being visibly tied off on the very front of the forefoot. For final alternate touches, a shaggy suede is used on the heel and bold white Y-3 branding appears on the tongue. Like the new-age look? The Superknot is available now at Y-3 stockists like Sneakersnstuff with an upscale price point of $280 USD.
