Although the Air Jordan 1 through the Air Jordan 14 are generally regarded as the most influential and most beloved shoes in Michael Jordan’s long-running line of signature footwear, other models in the line have also established their place in the annuals of footwear history. One of those higher-numbered but still historic shoes is the Air Jordan 20. First released in 2005, the Tinker Hatfield-designed silhouette aimed to look back at the last 20 years of Air Jordan footwear, and tell MJ’s life story. With its laser-etched midfoot strap, high ankle fastening, and 69 dots on the midsole — a clever nod to MJ’s highest single game point total — the striking kicks were a fitting homage to two decades of greatness.
Now in 2018, the Jordan 20 is back yet again — this time with a bold new Flyknit upper and two new colorways, a black/gum and a flight jacket-style olive and orange. The Air Jordan 20 Flyknit is a loving homage to the original shoe with a few modern-day alterations, and a new leading man: long-time Jordan Brand athlete Carmelo Anthony, who’s branding appears on the insoles of both shoes. The Flyknit upper mimics the texture of the original AJ20 with its ridged toe, but alters the shape with a high sock collar that extends above the ankle strap. The laser-etched midfoot strap detailing is gone as well, replaced by a tonal leather variation with a removable velcro “72023” patch, numbers that are a possible nod to the shoe’s genesis. For an extra touch, the black/gum pair also boasts a “New York City” hit alongside the Melo branding on the insole. Both of these unique Flyknit 20s are scheduled to release later this fall, so check our Jordan Release Dates page for updates as they’re available and enjoy a full set of images for both shoes below.
