John Kim Thirty years ago, the Air Jordan 3 was debuted worldwide on the feet of Michael Jordan during All-Star Weekend in Chicago, IL. The importance of this particular sneaker cannot be overlooked as it marked the first chapter of Tinker Hatfield’s legacy with the Jumpman, and also the one that kept MJ from leaving Nike to sign elsewhere. On the night of February 6th, the famed white leather sneakers on MJ’s feet catapulted him from the free throw line to the winner’s circle, defeating a very worth opponent in Dominique Wilkins. The very next night, MJ laced up a black leather version, dropped 40 points, and took home the prestigious All-Star Game MVP award.
To celebrate this incredible weekend, Jordan Brand is reviving the Air Jordan 3 Retro with its original Nike Air branding on the heel. The black leather version, dubbed “Black/Cement”, will return in its original form. The white leather version, dubbed the “White/Cement”, will arrive with some commemorative details that call out some specific sights and sounds of the ’88 dunk contest. The “147” on the tongue label calls out MJ’s total score in the final round of the dunk contest (he scored two perfect dunks and one at 47), while the red stripe on the sole represents the free throw line on the exact spot where MJ took flight.
Additionally, Jordan Brand is honoring the architect of the Air Jordan 3 by producing a never-before-seen construction – one that was actually an early sketch of the Air Jordan 3. This particular version features a Swoosh logo on the upper and “NIKE” embroidered on the medial side of the shoes, while the red heel-tab with the white Nike Air branding is a certified first as well.
These three Air Jordan 3 Retro releases will be available beginning February. The white “Dunk Contest” edition will drop on February 14th ($200), the “Black/Cement” edition will drop on February 17th ($200, full family sizes available), and the Air Jordan 3 “Tinker Hatfield” will arrive at stores on March 24th ($200).
