Before camp-outs for sneaker releases, long lines used to form by the Street Fighter II arcade machine; quarters ready, thumbs nimble, button-smashing not allowed. For those of you jaded by the next-generation gaming of today, Street Fighter II was available only on coin-operated arcade machines and didn’t release on home-consoles until years after its release (Sega Genesis had to make a special 6-button controller to fit SF’s needs). Before tag-team action and air combos, Street Fighter II was a simple, eight-character, one vs. one fighting game that revolutionized the fighting game genre; just like the Nike Dunk is, Street Fighter was long imitated, never replicated. So this Street Fighter x Nike SB Dunk collaboration might seem a bit out of left field, but it’s a definite treat for fans of the Dunk and the game.
The first two Quickstrikes pairs to surface just so happen to be inspired by the two most recognizable characters in video game history – Ryu and Chun Li. The Ryu x Nike SB Dunk Mid features a white, red, and black colorway to match his ‘ki’, with a tattered material on the swoosh to match his headband. The Chun Li x Nike SB Dunk Low features a blue upper with gold contrast stitching and a white swoosh. This could be just a start of a large collection, because we know there are a ton of Street Fighter characters to select.
