Easily one of the biggest sneaker stories in the first quarter of 2024 has been the success of Anthony Edwards’ shoes, journalists, athletes and fans alike celebrating the futuristic design of his first adidas signature shoe. It’s revealing of the current state of basketball footwear, however, that the first couple of pairs released to the public were devoid of any reference to his Timberwolves squad. Though a drop in “Arctic Mix” slanted towards that territory, the upcoming adidas AE1 “Velocity Blue” is the biggest embrace of Minny yet.
Given the comprehensive “Velocity Blue” makeover, we wouldn’t fault you for missing the allusions to the Western Conference contenders at first glance. Most of the heavy lifting in providing conceptual ties comes in peripheral branding, with the Wolves’ “Aurora Green” dressing the Three Stripes on the heel, and a pine tree outline on the tongue.
Taking the two primary shades together, these shoes reference the Kevin Garnett-era team far more than the current one, relying on the same tones of pre-2017 T-Wolves jerseys. It is worthy of note that these come with a set of green laces, allowing you to customize and drive the Minnesota allusions even further.
Regardless of what era exactly the references are picked from, Minnesota fans will surely appreciate the love all the same. The adidas AE1 “Velocity Blue” drop via adidas.com on March 14th for $120 (Men’s) and $100 (Grade School.) You can find a full suite of official images ahead.
In other news for the German giant, the “Spraypaint Pack” adidas Trae Young 3 provides a grafitti-inspired look for the newest Trae Young shoes.
