With each passing week, the biggest players in the sneaker space continue to offer a healthy balance between retro and future-forward product.
NIKE, Inc. has consistently served nostalgia in sneaker form since the mid-1990s. And while handfuls of the earliest Air Jordan models continue to help the North American brand bring in billions of dollars, the Swoosh conglomerate has never backed down from pursuing what’s next. Both the Nike Air Max Motif and Converse All Star BB Shift prove just that, even with obvious nods to both brand’s heritages. Furthermore, the 37-year-old Nike Dunk silhouette appeared in brand-new arrangements, which is impressive when considering the model has been in consistent rotation across in-line and Nike SB rosters for decades.
On the Three Stripes side of things, adidas shook up the sneaker and fashion worlds by unveiling its partnership with Gucci. Although much of the collection, which was unveiled on the runway in Milan, skews luxury instead of sportswear, it features at least a few pairs of footwear rooted in adidas Originals history. On the modern front, the Ultraboost 23 and Yeezy Foam Runner showcased the German sportswear institution’s commitment to the future, which isn’t always immediately appreciated. Nevertheless, both propositions have been refreshing for the footwear landscape, and have surely already laid the foundation for even bolder offerings in the works.
