A BATHING APE has championed collaboration since before it became an internationally recognized brand, and it did so on its home turf of Japan. For its latest joint-effort, the Far East Asian institution has partnered with ASICS for a bold GEL-1090.
Clad in understated shades of brown, the newly-surfaced pair boasts BAPE‘s iconic cloud camouflage pattern. A contrasting orange tone animates ASICS’ vector logo on the lateral mid-foot, while the same hue appears on the co-star’s tiger head mascot. Together, each design cue on this treat from two powerhouses from “the land of the rising sun” harken back to what many consider the golden age of Tokyo’s Harajuku scene. The ASICS GEL-1090, having debuted in 2003, serves as an appropriate canvas for A BATHING APE’s statement-making affinity that made its way around the globe around the same time. A blend of streetwear and performance has become common over the last 10 years, and the latest entry from two Japanese juggernauts continues that trend.
