Following a official-unofficial preview by the man himself in March, the era of the Nike Giannis Freak 7 is now formally beginning. Nike just let loose tech specs and release info for Antetekounmpo’s latest, including the on-court inspirations that light this design.

Indeed, it’s the Greek’s patented Eurostep that sits at the center of the Freak 7, most evidently dovetailing into the split traction pattern underfoot. Already a standout feature in those initial shots, “Antetokounmpo” spells out on the medial side, bleeding over with jagged protrusions into a more abstract multi-directional pattern on the lateral. From a performance standpoint, that outside insole is tooled for a rigid feel while its counterpart shoots towards a “smooth ride.” The striations that follow within the midsole aren’t just for show, either, tooled to flex and compress as you shift on the court. Finally, in terms of the cushioning package, this marks the first appearance of full-length Cushlon 3.0 in the Nike Basketball catalog.

While our initial coverage of the shoe delved heavily into the aesthetic notes, there are still some notable reveals within this press blast. The overall shape of the shoe pulls from the Greek sandal, a Parthenon starting point that influences the split in the upper. Where the initial concept drawings showcase finer details like the larger Antekounmpo clan being represented in debossed names throughout the midsole. Those documents also note Giannis’ direct input, reporting to the team that he wanted “a bold, simple icon” where “traction [is his] weapon.”

The black and orange “Ignition” featured throughout is set up to be the introductory look for the Nike Giannis Freak 7. Given initial social media reactions, it could quickly emerge as one of Giannis’ most beloved to date. We’ll have to wait until July 29th to find out — the Freak 7 will be available via Nike.com and partnering retailers for $110.
