Nike’s energy around the 30th anniversary of the Air Max 95 has clearly paid off — the return of OG and OG-styled editions are easily some of our most anticipated of Q2 and beyond. Contrast that with the current place of the Air Max 90 in its 35th, while even more of a frequent face on the newswire, the Swoosh seems content with rolling out the usual slate of GR product, often no less impressive from an aesthetic standpoint but undoubtedly of a more accessible tier.
The “Lightening” edition of the Air Max 90 on tap today certainly speaks to that. While the black and yellow combo that this shoe capitalizes is among the most reliable in Nike’s bag, there’s no special bells and whistles that elevate this pair above the modern AM90 looks we’ve come to expect. Flares of that sunny shade take up the lower eyestay, bubble window, and heel tab, all sunken into a stealthy body comprised o “Smoke Grey” and “Anthracite.” It may not be an exact variation on “Infrared” like we’ve seen from so many releases of this type, but this make-up suitable threads the needle between modernized aesthetics and a faithful recreation of the original grey-heavy do.
Expect the Nike Air Max 90 “Smoke Grey / Lightening” to hit shelves as a part of the Swoosh’s ongoing Summer/Fall efforts. Retail is set at $130 in men’s sizing. To keep tabs on when this shoe hits Nike.com, keep our Sneaker Release Dates hub handy.
