Matt Varga New Balance isn’t the slightest bit stringy in doling out retailer exclusives, often leveraging their wide web by placing some of their most cherished models in the hands of those stockists’ design teams. Already well-suited to the challenge given their historical work on the Air Max 95, JD Sports is sticking in that time period with a take on the New Balance 1000, available now overseas.
While the brand’s inline offerings have been plenty impressive, there’s no denying that this special make-up is a cut above, at the very least for its use of mixed media. While the mesh underpinnings and suede mudguard remains from the shoe’s typical build, reflective leather underlines the lace-stays, with a stripe of futuristic teal coarsing through it. It’s that interplay that truly defines this release, also quite stark with the underfoot webbing in that vibrant shade that slices through a greyscale outsole. Even if the New Balance 1000 has championed turn-of-the-century design, it’s the use of next century aesthetics that helps JD Sports’ take on the silhouette stand so clearly apart from the pack.
