A History Of Nike SB x Jordan
The partnership between Jordan Brand and Nike is as natural as they come. In the 1970s and 1080s, high-top leather basketball shoes were the weapon of choice for skaters for its ample durability and protection. Nike toyed with the Dunk Low as a skate shoe in the late 1990s, planting the seeds for what would eventually become the mega-successful Nike SB. Although Jordan was never officially part of the mix, Air Jordans played a role in some of the earliest hits such as the Supreme x Nike SB Dunk Low.
In 2014, Jordan Brand officially came into the mix with the first-ever Nike SB x Air Jordan collaboration. The black/green Air Jordan 1 designed by Craig Stecyk, a photographer/artist/filmmaker who documented the sport since the 1970s. In that same year, legendary skateboarder Lance Mountain released his take on the Air Jordan 1; it featured a mismatched Bred and Royal AJ1 covered in white and black exteriors that would wear away over time.
Since then, the Air Jordan 1 was the primary canvas for this cross-category partnership. In 2019, two iterations of the Air Jordan 1 High were introduced with the similar wear-away effect seen in Lance Mountain’s pairs. The two told the story of “NYC to Paris” and “LA to Chicago”; the former used a light grey/black exterior to represent NYC, with a Parisian taste of pinks and crimsons beneath. The “LA to Chicago” was a bit more straight forward as a Laker-friendly purple/yellow made way to the iconic “Chicago” underneath.

In Comes The Nike SB Air Jordan 4
The Air Jordan 4 doesn’t have nearly the amount of history in skateboarding like the Air Jordan 1 does. Still, the shoes debuted in 2023 in a “Pine Green” colorway with updated fit, materials, and construction to better withstand the beatdown of skateboarding. They were an instant hit with sneakerheads and skaters alike.
In 2025, Jordan Brand and Nike SB will release the second colorway of the Nike SB Air Jordan 4; following identical color-blocking as the predecessor, the “Navy” features hits of blue in place of the “Pine Green”. A third red pair was also revealed, although that pair is strictly for Friends and Family. Preceding all three is an all-black wear-test version that had only been spotted on Eric Koston before eventually making their way into the hands of high-end sneaker collectors.
