The New Balance 550 Pushes Vintage Aesthetics In “Dark Juniper”

There was a brief moment towards the end of 2024 when we thought the New Balance 550 might be taking a hiatus. Absent from the new releases newswire for a few months, the Steven Smith product is back in full effect to begin 2025, assuaging fears of it being shelved and still serving up its throwback DNA in a slew of fresh looks. The New Balance 550 “Dark Juniper” is the latest, a largely two-tone affair that’s already dropped in women’s sizing.

While faux-aged aesthetics are part of what catapulted the New Balance 550 to the forefront of sneakers at the start of the decade, this release demonstrates that there’s still meat left on the bone. A switch to suede on the collar and lowermost eye-stay panel adds both textural contrast and some aesthetic depth, departing from the off-white on the leather for a more unadulterated snow shade. Save for that, this colorway offers up a blocking scheme we’ve already seen plenty, pasting pine green pockets throughout the profile with select speckled patterning for a closing piece of visual intrigue.

The New Balance 550 “Dark Juniper” is available now via NB.com in women’s sizing, retailing for $120.
