Talk about turning back the clock. Currently in the middle of his 15th season in the NBA, James Harden echoed his all-time offensive run with a 50 point explosion against the Pistons, his first such effort with the Los Angeles Clippers. One game prior, that same motif of throwbacks was on display. As his LAC squad took on the Suns in Phoenix, the Beard stepped on the floor in AZ by nodding to his own roots in the state, lacing up a “Sun Devils” colorway of the adidas Harden Vol 9.
It’s a creative, dare we say hellish, flip on the school’s color codes. Maroon drapes the metallic outer shell, while golden shades peek through in distressed fashion from the Three Stripes cut-outs on the sidewalls. Anchoring the shoe and furthering its villainous atmosphere are jet black hits down the throat of the shoe and on the herringbone outsole. In taking the court in Phoenix, this marked the public debut of this specific make-up, absent from the initial preview of public colorways.
If you reach back to 2018, adidas did publicly release an “Arizona State” look for the Vol. 2. However, in more recent times, some of the more dazzling looks that Harden has sported on the court have remained true to their PE labels. The Arizona State pitchfork / trident on the tongue tag is just one of a few “special edition” indications that this may meet the same fate.
