Andrew Rizzo On top of several mainline releases, Nike is celebrating the 2024 Paris Olympics by linking up with a familiar collaborator. Images surfaced by @aaliyahnoell reveal a new COMME des Garçons x Nike Foamposite One for the occasion, complete with CDG’s hallmark contemporary aesthetic and a subtle nod to podium-worthy hardware.
While hardly an official preview, two key considerations make the inspiration behind the drop clear. The shoes are expected to release in June 2024, just a month before the Olympics begin, and bronze, silver, and gold stripes appear on the heel pull tab, an obvious reflection of Olympic Medal colors. Otherwise, the design fits well among other contemporary pairs in the CDG x Nike catalog.
COMME des Garçons took its first stab at the Foamposite One back in 2021 by introducing an entirely new upper, with circular, grooved ripples extending outward at the quarter and forefoot sections. This “Olympic” pair maintains that tooling, but distinguishes itself through a glossy, faded grey treatment. While the initial CDG x Nike Foamposite One delivery came as somewhat of a surprise given the model’s quiet run up until then, this latest delivery stands as part of a more current Foamposite revival. Nike has a slew of Foamposite Ones on its 2024 Sneaker Release Calendar, not to mention the Flightposite One “Metallic Gold” in Holiday 2024 and the return of the Nike Clogposite.
Much like the 2021 pairs, the CDG x Nike Foamposite One “Olympic” will release exclusively through Dover Street Market and potentially one or more select retailers. Additionally, there’s good news when it comes to price; the shoes will retail for $300, a considerable markdown from the $520 MSRP of the previous drop.
It’s worth pointing out that CDG x Nike collaborations tend to be around double the MSRP for standard pairs despite their executions being awfully simple (typically a mix of white and black, materials relatively common). The Foamposite is an exception as the mold for the new upper design is very costly, justifying the $520 MSRP to some degree. That being said, the new MSRP being $300 is unusual for a CDG x Nike collaboration.
