Updated May 7th, 2024: The ANTA KAI 1 “Mother’s Day” will release on May 11th, exclusive to an in-person drop at Sneaker Room. Exact specifications haven’t yet been clarified (FCFS, raffle, etc), but a retail price of $125 is expected. Given that Irving released similar Nike editions through the store, this reprises a long-time connection between the two. @therealsuraj201, the store’s founder took to Instagram a few days before this info arose, confirming that proceeds from the release would be put towards community outreach initiatives. Below you can find some additional images of the shoes- keep this page handy for the latest information as it emerges.
Even just a few releases in, we can chalk up the ANTA KAI 1 as a success. The cadence of its releases seems to be shaking out into a predictable pattern: first Kyrie rocks a pair, then they release to the public a few weeks later. Initially reported on after Irving rocked them versus the Clippers, the “Mother’s Day” colorway seems to be trending towards a wide release in the coming weeks.
The layered, woozy construction of the model continues to shine, but this is arguably the first colorway to lean into an orthodox palette. Instantly recognizable red, white and blue are the dominant tones across the upper, with the tan shades of the gum sole matched on branding throughout the shoe. Speaking of, the branding sections are the greatest presentation of the “Mother’s Day” theme. On the strap closure and pull tab, Kyrie Irving’s name is replaced by the word “Mother,” still spelled out in the trademark hieroglyphics typeface that’s marked past releases.
While they may be more conservative at first glance, in true Kyrie fashion, there’s no heady detail spared. A geometric pattern of primary colors paints the sockliner, continuing on eye stay loops and a design on the toe-box that almost resembles street signs. This continues an overarching series of tributes to Kyrie’s mom that stretches back to his Nike days, potentially hinting at a reunion with hometown retailer Sneaker Room who’ve released each previous version.
There’s no concrete release for this pair, but with Mother’s Day approaching on May 12th, there’s a decent chance they’ll debut in the next couple of weeks. Get a detailed look ahead with images via @lwss_dbcm.
