Original article published April 27th, 2024: The most popular made-for-turf/grass athletic shoes of the 1990s are returning with updates made suitable for their intended sports. We saw with Deion Sanders shoes and his Air DT Max’ 96 recently as the OG Black/University Gold colorway was confirmed to return in the lifestyle and cleated version. Hopefully the same can be said for the Air Griffey Max 2, because the Swoosh has just revealed Griffey’s second signature shoe in a diamond-ready proposition.

While not an original colorway, this Griffey Max 2 Cleat features a black leather base with electric yellow accents on the forefoot Swoosh logo, the medial heel, and the iconic Swingman emblem at the heel. A curious star icon is featured on the tongue pull-tab, possibly suggesting that these may be a special edition release for the 2024 MLB All-Star Game taking place in Arlington, Texas.

Of course, the real hope is that Nike brings back the Griffey Max 2 in street-proper form, but thus far no such news has been reported. However, based on the energy around Coach Prime’s footwear and with signature basketball shoes as a whole getting a lot of consumer attention in 2024, hopefully this marks the return of the performance era in both modern and Retro form.

A firm release date has yet to be revealed, but expect these sometime in July ahead of the mid-Summer classic with an MSRP of $150.
