Just when it appeared that hype surrounding the New Balance 2002R was finally starting to cool, Shoe Palace brings the heat (literally) with two exclusive, collaborative pairs. As a whole, the “Volcanic Rocks Pack” represents the journey of lava through the elements of air and newly formed land, not to be confused with the similarly inspired Salehe Bembury “Heat Be Hot” New Balance 1906R capsule.
Both co-signed pairs feature suede-heavy builds but take different approaches when it comes to their color and tooling. Notably, the “Air” colorway features a wide mesh base while the “Land” design opts for tighter fabric in that area, two decisions that speak to the properties of each pair’s respective inspiration.
The journey of lava begins on the “Air” pair through multiple shades of blue. Hairy suede overlays adopt a sky-colored hue, while darker traditional suede fabrics add contrast on top. The midsole balances that darker shade on the heel with “Angora” on the forefoot section, while red lining serves as the design’s most apparent lava-themed callback.
As one might expect, the “Land” pair boasts a far less colorful look. The shoe features hairy and traditional suede in all the same places as its counterpart, only taken in different brown hues to reflect the final look of molten lava rock. Both pairs come with lava-inspired patterned insoles, reflective New Balance logos, and extra laces that allow for different styling.
