Chet Holmgren Stars In Official Ad For The Nike KD 17

The Nike KD 17 is Kevin Durant’s newest signature shoe for 2024. It is the seventeenth model in the Nike KD legacy; Durant is a life-time Nike athlete, so there is no end in sight for this widely-popular basketball shoe. The KD 17 is also confirmed to release on May 17th, 2024 with an MSRP of $150; it will be available on Nike.com and partnering Nike Basketball retailers.

THE DEBUT

Kevin Durant officially debuted the Nike KD 17 on April 20th, 2024 during Game 1 of the MIN/PHX Playoffs series. Durant wore an all-black colorway of the KD 17; it is not confirmed if that version is just a sample pair for the athlete, or if it’s a future release. All-black colorways are not common in the KD signature shoe line, so it may very well be an one-off for Kevin himself. See the images of the shoes below.

AD CAMPAIGN

In a video shared by footwear retailer Hibbett, an official ad campaign for the Nike KD 17 has been revealed with Nike athlete Chet Holmgren. Holmgren, who plays for the OKC Thunder, could be wearing the Nike KD 17 throughout the remainder of the Playoffs. It appears that Nike may be broadening the KD umbrella by tapping younger athletes in the league who have similar physical builds as the two-time NBA champion. See the official spot below.

DESIGN INSPIRATION

Kevin Durant’s new signature shoes typically debut late in the NBA season, with KD himself usually rocking the new kicks during the Playoffs. This notion has been confirmed as Durant himself debuted the new signature shoe on April 20th, 2024 in the Playoffs.

The first launch colorway of the Nike KD 17 is pictured just below. The official colorway is University Gold/Black/Safety Orange and has been given the unofficial nickname of “Sunrise” for its resemblance to the popular Air Max Plus colorway. See a detailed on-foot look below.

Nike has yet to announce official details of the shoe design. However, we can surmise that there is heavily influence from 1998’s Air Max Plus, a sneaker that has been an emphasis for the brand’s Sportswear department.

Ironically, the colorway resembles the colors of the OKC Thunder. Durant famously left Oklahoma City as a free agent, signing with nemesis Golden State in what may be one of the most notorious off-season player moves in NBA history. OKC still hasn’t forgiven KD for his decision as he is often rained with boos when he plays against his former team.
