Though the brand has achieved its recent success via the revitalization of aughts-era runners, the New Balance 1906R as a model may be their fullest embrace of that trend. Receiving an extra boost via Aimé Leon Dore, size? and CDG collaborations in 2023, the sneaker is again shaping up for a big year in 2024. With a few more big linkups on the horizon, the GR “Green/Astral Purple” 1906R adds some accessible heat to the upcoming sked.
Departing decisively from the neutral tonality of mainline NB releases, this pair is as neon-shaded as you’ll find. A radioactive green takes to the leather webbing and the nylon strings in the side “N” logo. From there, the back cage chooses the “Astral Purple,” while “Watercress” blue meets pink in the sole for one final splash of color.
In fact, that rosy hue plays more of a role than that titular teal, dying the sock liner and a few pieces of branding as it warms up the otherwise cool palette at play here. Nonetheless, this sneaker runs the gambit across a quarter of the color wheel in its way to producing a vibrant statement piece.
Zooming out, the resemblance may not be 1 to 1, but there’s no doubt that this general release edition is sculpted in the same model as the luminescent pairs in the Action Bronson New Balance 1960R capsule, particularly the “Rosewater” colorway. As we await release details for that highly-anticipated, oft-teased collection, this “Green/Astral Purple” pair presents an opportunity to get ahead of what’s sure to be a contentious release.
Though we can’t confirm an exact date, this pair of New Balance 1906R’s is coming soon to the New Balance app and website. Anticipate a sticker price of $155 when they do.
Elsewhere out of Boston, the New Balance 550 just unveiled a slew of new colorways set to drop as we get closer to spring.
