Kobe Bryant’s “sneaker free agency” period is one of the more unforgettable spans of time in footwear history during which a top-tier athlete wasn’t tied to one brand in particular. He ran amok with a whole arsenal of sneakers on court, sporting Nike, Jordan, and Reebok in a variety of Lakers-friendly PE colorways, leaving fans on the edge of their seat.
Of that rotation, the Air Jordan Player Exclusives stood above the rest. At a time when Retro PEs were mere team color swaps of existing Air Jordans, the purple and yellow on the Air Jordan 3, 7, and 8 were absolute jaw-droppers for its simplicity, but more for the possibilities. Of course Kobe went on to sign with Nike, spawning the greatest Nike Basketball signature shoe line in history — one that continues its legacy today.
Now, adidas is returning the favor of sorts as it delivers a Crazy 1 with Washington Wizards colors in mind. It’s almost as if they made a PE for Jordan himself when he decided to return to the NBA for his love of the game. It features an all-white base, decorate with succinct hints of that Wizards blue and gold from days past.
These obviously have no connection to Michael Jordan or the Wizards on any capacity, but it’s fun to imagine, isn’t it? If you’re a fan, look out for the Crazy 1 to hit US retailers soon, because they’ve already been made available in Asia.
In other Kobe news, here’s the latest on this week’s Kobe 8 “Court Purple” release.
