Throughout its 36-year history, the Nike Air Max 1 has taken on countless experimental and eyebrow-raising ensembles. As the temperature continues to drop and the days become shorter Tinker Hatfield’s iconic design has exchanged bold tones with muted colors. The latest?: “Football Grey.”

Other Nike Sportswear offerings from the last few years have also indulged in the understated hue, delivering versatile style. The latest take on Hatfield’s original Air Max keeps things simple in color-blocking, falling in line with the silhouette’s most iconic layout. Mudguards opt for the titular “Football Grey” color, contrasting breathable mesh bases clad in “White.” Curved panels from vamp to spine deviate in a lighter grey that sets the stage for a darker shade of the tone via the profile swooshes. Additional Nike branding on the top of the tongue and heel follow suit.

The industry-changing sole unit underfoot stays on theme with the upper’s color palette. An off white finish takes on the midsole, including the visible Air unit inspired by Paris’ Centre Pompidou. Waffle-patterned outsoles round out the style with a grayscale arrangement that complements the rest of the sneaker well.
