New Balance’s Made In USA program has arguably not missed since Teddy Santis took the helm. Over the last year, the dynamic duo have released a handful of collections that’ve brought new excitement to several decades-old designs.
Recently, the New Balance 996 emerged in a “White/Black” color scheme and details denoting its manufacturing in the U.S. The sneaker debuted in 1988 and delivered the biggest departure from the original NB 990. Its multi-layered upper and robust cushioning underfoot aren’t too futuristic for modern times, but the NB 996 falls in line with a current “old school runner” trend. Panels throughout the upper favor shades of “White,” while profile “N” logos and upper heel overlays favor pitch-dark contrast. Tried-and-proven solo units underfoot introduce a slight-yellow into the mix, simultaneously injecting an “aged” aesthetic that’s appeared on other work by Santis. Lastly, the rugged outsole dons a two-tone color arrangement that complements the top-half.
