Jovani Hernandez Over the last two years, laceless, slip-on footwear has exploded in popularity as people have adopted a “function over fashion” mentality due to increased time indoors. In the same timeframe, some of the biggest players in the footwear space have reimagined what slides, mules and other lounge-appropriate designs can be, pushing the boundaries of a category that’s remained relatively unchanged for more than a few decades. Recently, Matthew M. Williams revealed his proposition in the form of the MMW NIKE ZOOM 005 slide.
Williams, an alum of Kanye West’s Yeezy, has carved out a niche space for himself within the Swoosh’s expansive catalog of product. Favoring brutalist form and robust hardware, the 1017 ALYX 9SM label co-founder has utilized Nike’s performance-informed innovation to create fashion-forward takes that marry sport and style in an unconventional way. His latest project, a follow-up to the rather simple series of Air Force 1 Highs he dropped throughout 2021, gives the accessible slide format an elevated aesthetic. Dual-foam outsoles deliver improved comfort, while the stability plate wedged in-between them inject a certain rigidity for use outside of the home. The foam upper features a series of perforations that enable effective breathability, working in-tandem with the drainage holes underfoot to keep the wearer’s foot cool and dry. No Zoom Air units are visible on the next Matthew M. Williams x Nike project despite “ZOOM” being included in the slide’s name. Nevertheless, the same attention to detail found in the American designer’s other work is present on the MMW NIKE ZOOM 005 (dust bags included).
