With fourteen days left in 2021, most of the sneaker headlines that surfaced over the last seven days related to projects for the new year.
On the NIKE, Inc. front, COMME des GARÇONS unveiled one of the most eye-catching Nike designs of the last 20 years: the Nike Premier Heel. A Nike Air Force 1 Mid duo by Stussy also delivered sneak peeks at what the 40th anniversary of Bruce Kilgore’s iconic design will include, as did a very early look at Billie Eilish‘s “Mushroom”-colored high-top. Away from the 1982-design, partners like the Chris Gibbs-led Union Los Angeles confirmed that the Nike Dunk isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Under the Three Stripes umbrella, adidas Basketball unveiled the latest member of its storied roster, Damian Lillard‘s eighth signature sneaker. While the market dominance of the shoe has yet to play out, leaks of more adidas Forum colorways by Bad Bunny demonstrated how ready the sneaker space is for more styles from the Puerto Rican superstar. The being formerly known as “Kanye West” also (unofficially) shared looks at more adidas Yeezy releases, which includes an extremely early look at what might be the version two of the ever-divisive Yeezy Foam Runner.
As has become customary of the week in sneaker-related headlines, handfuls of Air Jordan retros were rumored and confirmed over the last week. While tried-and-proven models like the Air Jordan 3 – which was confirmed as part of the Spring 2022 Jordans collection – drew attention, the relatively-new Air Jordan 1 Zoom CMFT garnered a lot of praise after emerging in a non-heritage “Washed Blue” colorway. As a modified version of Michael Jordan’s first signature sneaker, the ultra-cushioned silhouette has received a lot of criticism since debuting in 2020, with many purists completely rejecting it. But, as has become the case with the Air Jordan 1 Mid, the Zoom CMFT iteration has won some naysayers over with compelling color combinations. Modern-day Zoom Air and other comfort-oriented design choices have also led some skeptics embrace and evangelize on the sneaker’s behalf.
