Aimé Leon Dore and New Balance have been relatively quiet on the joint-effort front since restocking a few of their 550s in late September, but that’s changing as the end of 2021 inches closer. Recently, the partnership unveiled a New Balance 993 duo seemingly inspired by New York City’s grittiness.
ALD has shaken up the sneaker space with a number of less-heralded NB silhouettes, but the latest collaboration sees it reimagining the 993 for the first time. Both newly-surfaced pairs indulge in a mesh base, premium pig suede overlay combination; ABZORB-cushioning and Ndurance-accompanied outsoles opt for a tonal black arrangement that allows the uppers’ color palettes to revel in the spotlight. Teddy Santis, New Balance’s current Creative Director Of Made In USA, hasn’t disclosed both pairs’ inspirations, but when coupled with the graffiti-like font on promotional material, the color combinations ostensibly become nods to Santis’ hometown. Dark brown and green on one pair are worthy of the “Beef & Broccoli” moniker widely given to a certain Timberland boot of similar color-blocking – inspired by a Chinese dish – while the grey, blue and burgundy arrangement on the second 993 might reference the colors that wrapped MTA subway carts during the 1990s, an era in which train “bombing” (spray paint) was much more common among city youth.
