From new releases to shake-ups in the business side of sneakers, the last seven days delivered a considerable amount of news.
2006-2021
adidas‘ parent company announced it sold Reebok to Authentic Brands Group (ABG) for more than $2 billion USD. The world first caught wind of the Three Stripes attempting to sell the English-founded company at the tail-end of 2020. Although the brand was sold for less than the $3.8 billion USD it was purchased for back in 2006, it can’t be remised that it was a profitable venture for adidas’ parent company, while also allowing it to diversify its influence and reach. The future of Reebok is unknown, but new ownership might be exactly what the brand needs.
Elsewhere under the Three Stripes umbrella, The Simpsons has reimagined an adidas McCarten as a shoe for none other than Ned Flanders. A number of of EQT and adidas Forum options surfaced, the latter receiving one of the most eye-catching styles of the year courtesy of Kerwin Frost.
THE NAME OF THE GAME (STILL)
Over the last two years, collaborations have become omnipresent within the world of sneakers, and NIKE, Inc. arguably leads the pack. Travis Scott, fresh off his own string of Swoosh-backed projects, took to Instagram Stories to tease a Solefly x Air Jordan 1 Low. sacai and fragment design also had two of their Nike LDWaffle creations emerge via official images, leading some spectators to express how they believe the pairs are too plain. Hiroshi Fujiwara showed another color of his fragment design x Nike Dunk High on social media too, although there’s no word as to whether or not the black and navy proposition will ever release.
Casablanca and New Balance unveiled the latest chapter of its burgeoning partnership with the sports car-inspired New Balance XC-72. Kiko Kostadinov, Brain Dead and ASICS shared a look at one of their most complex-looking arrangements yet on the limited GEL-Fratelli.
