The “dad shoe” trend began as a joke a few years ago, but has stuck around, influencing some of the most powerful players in the sneaker space. Nike hasn’t been excluded, although it produced one of the pioneers in the space. Its latest effort, however, modernizes the Air Monarch IV into a sportier-looking option.
Set to release in the handful of signature colorways countless customers have come to know and love, the updated silhouette features a sleeker shape and less robust sole unit. A plethora of synthetic leather overlays still appear across the upper, but they’re no longer accompanied by visible mesh at the mid-foot. Perforations are also kept at a minimum, disappearing from the profiles, while breathable paneling is made more prominent around the collar and heel. Father-approved pull tabs at the spine reprise their standard role, whereas midsoles abandon any mark denoting full-length Air cushioning. Nevertheless, the aesthetic suggests the modified “dad shoe” delivers comfort adequate enough for mowing the lawn, grilling and more.
