Michael Le Though helmed by names like NIGO and Pharrell, the adidas collaborative family is arguably most impressive for its rising talents. And among them, Grace Wales Bonner — whose works were teased months back on the AW20 runway — is soon to officially debut her inaugural collection, a series that uses footwear, apparel, and the designer’s unique perspective to explore 70s subculture.
“It was amazing to get into the archive with adidas, and really study how it has been interpreted by different cultures across times.” Bonner explained. “I was interested in elevating the familiar, and bringing an evening wear and tailored sensibility to this essential collection.”
While the garments further interpret the beloved Three Stripes tracksuit and branded tops, the forthcoming SL72 nods to the 1970s in its retro-influenced palettes. Of the set, the boldest places light pastel yellows atop a forest green nylon, while the seemingly faded suede overlays adjacent contrast in their burnt red shading. In departure, the following colorway leans more heavily on warm tones as every bit of its construction is filmed in either a red or deep orange.
What’s more, Bonner has also prepared the iconic Samba in two ways. The first incorporates hand-stitched details and crochet logos atop a black frame, each thread dressed in a contrasted light cream. And while the tongues are elongated and brandished with tasteful co-branding here, its complement forgoes such a design, its upper composed of raw cotton, velvet laces, and translucent outsoles in further departure.
