NIKECRAFT, the “50-50 enterprise” manned by Nike and Tom Sachs, continues to push the envelope in terms of wearable innovation, starting simple with the very first Mars Yard while standing currently with what is effectively their most ambitious range of apparel yet — the “Transitions” collection as they choose to dub it. But the conversation regarding this very project only began a few years ago, after Jarret Reynolds, the Senior Design Director, ran into a few obstacles in his poncho’s multi-prototype run, thus inciting him to request assistance from the famed collaborator. “We’ve got to do something with this,” said Sachs, and so began the painstaking process of trial and error, research and development, and a wealth of man hours insuring all details are up to par.
The explosive outerwear piece is undoubtedly at the helm here, using the same Dyneema fabric employed in the shell of the Mars Yard Overshoe. What it has over the silhouette in terms of utility, however, is its ability to compact itself into a waist pack sized shape, ready to use at the pull of a parachute release mechanism. Further details such as hand-drawn typefaces, American motifs, and ceramic embellishments mark with the language of Tom Sachs and his small but dedicated Soho studio. Elsewhere, the artist has added a range of more everyday basics tinged with a bit of eclecticism alongside: shorts, built with Fidlock buckles at their belted waist, are given a quilted down construction for extra warmth without compromising flexibility; the shirting, which may not be as outward functional, adds a small batch of signature style in short or long sleeve; and the cap doses further astronautical references with a spot for your pencil stitched along the back.
