Revealed at the Nike Forum just last night, Matthew M Williams is one of the many stars to take part in the Tokyo Olympics celebration — a fitting entry as the designer often employed performance tech for his many collaborations. Though withheld of removable Vibram soles, his pair that be is anything but ordinary or even recognizable, as the ALYX head turns to brutalism to craft what is undoubtedly one of the most aggressive toolings we’ve seen to date. Warped and accentuated at all parts, the sole ostensibly works in layers: the top half a much slimmer profile that envelops as a foundation and the bottom a tank-like tread that seems to upgrade with oversized zoom at the forefoot and an almost springboard-esque construction at the heel. Transitioning unto the upper, the toe cap distorts the shape into an aesthetic far more angular, while then rounding off its edges into a display of open weave FlyKnit and overlaid shields of a sturdy silver metallic whose build opens up just enough to reveal the miniature swoosh within. Branding elsewhere finds its way through in even smaller variations of the check and simple “MMW” text placements at the vamp as well as the heel counter. Grab an intimate look at these right here and expect a release to hit closer to the Olympics come Summer time.
