Nike Introduces 3D-Printed Uppers To The Air Zoom Mercurial Football Cleat For Tokyo Olympics

The Olympics have historically served as a stage on which athletes from all walks of life can make a name for themselves and their countries. And while this will undoubtedly be the case at the forthcoming Tokyo-held competition, the multi-month event has also given way to sponsors and other stakeholders attempting to make history of their own with compelling campaigns and products. Of the latter, performance-footwear from Nike has risen to the occasion time and time again, be it on the basketball court, running track, or football pitch, and its 2020 offerings are no different. Enter: The Air Zoom Mercurial Flyprint.

For the first time ever, Nike’s 3D-Printed textile upper will see a football application after debuting on the running-focused Zoom Vaporfly Elite in 2018. Yet, as impressive as the single strand-constructed, weight-reducing/moisture-wicking upper is, the Air Zoom Mercurial’s most notable feature is the full-length Zoom Air bag underfoot. Previously, Nike implemented the proprietary technology across a slew of products with the sole goal of “cushioning,” but it switches its focus to “responsiveness” for its newest football boot. At 4.5mm thick, the Zoom Air unit offers an enhanced energy-returning sensation achieved by migrating the typical layers, save for the sockliner, between it and the wearer’s foot onto the cleat’s plate. What’s left is an ultra-lightweight, but sturdy performance model ready to attack on the pitch in all the fast and stylish glory signature to the Mercurial line.

The Air Zoom Mercurial Flyprint will be worn by Nike-sponsored athletes during the multi-month event. A retail release on Nike.com will likely occur soon after. Until then, check out what else The Swoosh Brand has planned for Tokyo Olympics 2020 and beyond.
