A quick Google search of “high fashion sneaker” will provide you with countless listings to impractical footwear offerings from Jimmy Choo, Alexander McQueen, and Givenchy, as well as a handful of thinkpieces dissecting luxury’s ever-growing presence in sneaker culture, inspired by recent Prada x adidas and Dior x Jordan collaborations. What you won’t find, however (at least not in the first dozen Google pages), is the Chanel x Reebok InstaPump Fury. It’s fine if you didn’t know such a joint-effort existed given that the mythical project only ever officially graced the Paris runway back in October 2000 as part of Chanel’s ready-to-wear Spring/Summer 2001 show. Although the original chic model shows no signs of ever re-releasing, an InstaPump Fury resembling the unicorn-of-a-sneaker has recently popped up online. The Steven Smith-designed silhouette sports a muted color palette across the upper of this forthcoming iteration, but has swapped materials and colors. For starters, the newer release dons a pure white mesh on its tongue, heel, and toebox, whereas the luxury take opted for an off-white suede on these parts. Furthermore, the side panels on the upcoming sneaker have light-grey side overlays; the high-fashion-version reveled in drab grey. No interlocking-C Chanel logos will be found on the shoe’s heel, but fans of the original are likely to rejoice at the grey and black midsoles that really drive the point home that these are nods to the fabled collaboration.
The line between high and low will most certainly continue to be blurred in the next decade – and we’ll be providing coverage.
