The intersection between the Air Jordan 1 and the world of skate dates back to 1985 when Nike released Michael Jordan’s first ever shoe. Originally intended for the NBA hardwood, the leather constructed sneaker was a favorite among skaters for its protective and durable qualities. In fact, most of Nike’s basketball shoes of that era were ended up on the feet of skaters, but the Air Jordan 1 has managed to be the poster-child of that dual-sport distinction thanks its apperance on ramps and backyard pools, all captured on magazine covers and homemade videos.
Back in 2014, this crossover between Jordan Brand and Nike Skateboarding came to fruition thanks to some poignant designs by skate legend Lance Mountain and artist Craig Stecyk. Lance’s version alternately paired up the original “Banned” and “Royal” colorways and covered the exterior entirely with white or black paint that naturally wore away over time. A similar concept appears in the 2019 versions which sees a Lakers-friendly purple and yellow that transforms to a black and red, and a second light bone version that reveals a pink hue underneath. Both versions feature Nike SB tongue labels and Zoom Air insoles consistent with modern day SB footwear.
According to Jordan Brand, both colorways of these cross-category mash-ups will release separately on May 25th, 2019 for an MSRP of $175. See an exclusive, detailed look at the footwear below and stay tuned for updates as the release approaches.
