Although they may come from vastly different backgrounds, Converse and legendary thrash metal band Suicidal Tendencies have a lot more in common than you may think. Both the brand and the band boast extreme longevity. Both have mostly eschewed doing what’s “popular” for what they like. And both have a devoted fan base that has only grown stronger as the years go on. Now in 2018, the two parties are coming together for a capsule collection consisting of two new Chuck 70s and co-branded apparel.
Suicidal Tendencies frontman Mike Muir received his first pair of Converse Chuck Taylors as a young teenager all the way back in the 1970s. Being from California, Muir has always been a fan of Chucks, stating “It’s one of those things that sells itself. You could identify with the shoes where we were from in California.” Muir and the band’s Cali heritage is evident on the capsule collection, which heavily features skulls and raw, done-by-hand style lettering — the same style that Suicidal Tendencies has been using since their first album in 1983. The Chuck 70 High features an all-over digital print and leather Suicidal Tendencies patch, while the Chuck 70 Low drops the patch in favor of simple screened artwork on the heel and tongue. The co-branded apparel also features an unmistakably hand-drawn look, staying true to the band’s heritage.
The collection is set to drop on Nike.com and at select Converse stockists September 7th, but if you’re in Boston, the shoes will release on the 6th with a special pop-up at Bodega that coincides with a Suicidal Tendencies show at the House of Blues.
