Tech magazine Wired was recently granted access into Nike’s infamous Innovation Kitchen for an exclusive look at the upcoming HyperAdapt 1.0, providing the world with new information and details of the self-lacing sneaker debuted by the brand earlier this year at their Innovation Summit in New York City. With a behind-the scenes look at the making of the HyperAdapt 1.0, lead creators of the shoe Tinker Hatfield and Tiffany Beers revealed exactly how the shoe works.

Twenty-eight years in the making after the fictional power-lacing Nike Mag was featured in Back to the Future Part 2, a fully functioning self-lacing sneaker is finally becoming a reality with the  HyperAdapt 1.0. The shoe utilizes what Nike is calling adaptive fit technology, which features four main components: a heel sensor to alert the shoe when a foot enters it, a cable lacing system, a high-tech mini-motor that tightens and loosens the cables, and a rechargeable battery to provide power to the motor and L.E.D. lights within the incredible feat of footwear engineering.

To see the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0 in action with more insight from Tinker and Tiffany, watch Wired’s video below, and expect the first-ever power-lacing sneaker to arrive at retail this holiday season—November 28th to be exact.
