What would happen if adidas was debuting the Superstar today instead of forty-five years ago? So much has changed in how basketball shoes are made over that period that it’s almost impossible to imagine, but Yohji Yamamoto, who is known for his own futuristic design, has managed to give us some kind of idea. Yamamoto’s adidas Y-3 Smooth takes a hightop Shelltoe silhouette and adds to it an externalized heel counter, an oversized take on the ones that appear on several of today’s performance hoop shoes. The juxtaposition against grainy black leather perfectly expresses the era-bridging nature of this design, and you can see some more photos below before you pick up a pair from shops like Kith.
