New Balance’s numbering system was designed to provide an instant reference to a shoe’s relative capabilities, but here’s a case where the straightforward system gets a bit confusing. NB teased a 30th anniversary edition of their classic 990 back at the start of the summer, but even earlier, we’d seen the above pictured silhouette carrying that same number. The ‘new’ New Balance 990 is closer to the 991, but features big ‘N’ styling blended into the techier upper design.
