Michael Jordan wore the ‘Columbia’ Air Jordan XI en route to the MVP award at the 1996 NBA All-Star Game in Phoenix, and given the recent history of Jordan Brand holiday releases, it seems all but guaranteed that we’ll either see those or the ‘Bred’ edition retroed as this Christmas’ can’t-miss retro. MJ Likely would have picked a similarly ‘off’ colorway for the following year’s ASG in Clevland, but the NBA’s choice to employ an MLB-style BYO-uniform dress code resulted in the more natural match being to the eventual ‘Playoffs’ colorway of the Air Jordan XII. That means that the OG ‘Obsidian’ AJXII went down as one of the most overlooked first-run colorways from the championship era Air Jordan Legacy, and this general lack of attention is reflected by the lack of a retro some fifteen years after its February 1997 debut. But that all changes this summer, when the Air Jordan 12 Retro ‘Obsidian’ makes good on the promise of a low-cut version we got back in ’04 and makes a Saturday, June 23rd release date one of the best graduation presents a Jordanhead could ever have.
