Hideo Nomo first followed in Ken Griffey Jr.’s footsteps over fifteen years ago when his Nike Air Max NM came to market sporting almost the exact same multi-cushioned sole setup as Junior’s legendary Air Griffey Max 1. Both players’ careers took a variety of twists and turns after that 1996 connection, and it’s taken quite a while to see more imitation, aside from the recent run of Nomo retros from Nike Sportswear in the wake of a hugely successful Griffey revival. So when you start to see a bunch of new colorways from the AMNM and then this design reminiscent of both 2009’s AGM1 and the OG Air Total Griffey Max (also set to hit retail this year), it’s only natural to see a stronger correlation between these mid-’90s baseball trainers. But few shoes of any genre can match the Air Max NM’s unique lacing setup, which looks even wilder with all-Volt through the tongue area while contrasted by the crisp royal blue upper. Did the best Nomo signature come out some seven years after his career was over?
